Quote: A leadership takes people where they want to go, a great leadership takes people where they ought to be. (Rosalynn Carter)
DEFINITION #1- THE ART OF MOTIVATING A GROUP OF PEOPLE TO ACT TOWARDS ACHIEVEMENT OF A COMMON GOAL.
- Our job as a leader is to take people from point A to point B. From where they are at and to where they should be.
- No need for leadership if there isn’t a common goal.
Proverbs 11:14 (ICB) Without leadership a nation will be defeated…
- Defeated: (Nepal) fall, fail, dies, falls short, are overthrown, overwhelmed, are ruined, perish.
- Every winning team has a winning coach.
DEFINITION #2– THE ABILITY TO INFLUENCE SOMEONES THOUGHTS, ATTITUDES, AND ACTIONS.
A. Everything Jesus did and taught was meant to influence His disciples thoughts, attitudes, and actions.
John 13:13-15 (AMP) 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right in doing so, for that is who I am. 14 So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet as well. 15 For I gave you [this as] an example, so that you should do [in turn] as I did to you.
B. One of the major ways that Jesus influenced His disciples was through giving them an example to follow.
- Never ask someone to do something that you are not willing to do. Leadership is not just talk it is also walk.
C. Another way Jesus won over His disciples was through practicing servant leadership.
Matthew 20:26 (NLT) But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,
Quote: The strength of any organization is a direct result of the strength of its leaders. Weak leaders equal weak organizations. Strong leaders equal strong organizations.
A. Positional leaders depend on their title to influence people to act.
- A positional leader that is insecure will default to flaunting his title to get people to do what he wants them to do. They basically boss people around.
Matthew 20:25 (NLT) But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.
- Positional leaders not only depend on their title to lead they also depend on the influence of their leaders ex. “Pastor Marco said…” they use their leaders influence to move the people.
- Until a Leaders earns the trust and respect of the people he will have to depend on threats, enforcing rules and his title to influence the people.
B. A positional leaders greatest use of time, is time used to build relationships and trust. (Until they trust him they will not willingly follow him.)
- A positional leader leans on His title because he has not built any relationship equity. Until the people that he is leading believe that he really cares for them they will not give him permission to lead them.
A. A positional leaders can graduate to a Permissional leader through acts of service and kindness.
- (A New King Rehoboam became a King and had opportunity to go from a positional leader to a Permissional leader but blew it. The people will give you a chance but then we have earn their trust. Trust and influence can be gained or lost. It is a lot easier to lose trust than gain it.)
1 Kings 12:1-16 (NLT) 1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, where all Israel had gathered to make him king. . . 3 The leaders of Israel summoned him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel went to speak with Rehoboam. 4 “Your father was a hard master,” they said. “Lighten the harsh labor demands and heavy taxes that your father imposed on us. Then we will be your loyal subjects.” 5 Rehoboam replied, “Give me three days to think this over. Then come back for my answer.” So the people went away. 6 Then King Rehoboam discussed the matter with the older men who had counseled his father, Solomon. “What is your advice?” he asked. “How should I answer these people?” 7 The older counselors replied, “If you are willing to be a servant to these people today and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your loyal subjects.” 8 But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young me who had grown up with him and were now his advisers. …” 10 The young men replied, “This is what you should tell those complainers who want a lighter burden: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist! 11 Yes, my father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!’” … 13 But Rehoboam spoke harshly to the people, for he rejected the advice of the older counselors … 15 So the king paid no attention to the people. … 16 When all Israel realized that the king had refused to listen to them, they responded, “Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Back to your homes, O Israel! Look out for your own house, O David!” So the people of Israel returned home.
- Because Rehobam refused to listen to the people and spoke harshly to them Israel did not give them permission to lead them.
B. A Permissional leader gains the trust of those he is leading through being humble and looking out for the interest of others. (People will give us permission to lead them when they know that our motives are pure.)
Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT) 3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
C. Great ways to build trust:
- Most people are insecure, so give them confidence.
- Most people want a bright future, so give them hope.
- Most people need to be understood, so listen to them.
- Most people want direction, so walk with them.
- Most people are discouraged, so encourage them.
- Most people want to be included, so ask them for their input.
- Most people want success, so help them win.
- Most people want to grow, so help them grow and mature.
- Most people people want to be appreciated, so give them credit.
A. The people followed and respected David because of His feats on the battle field and all the victories that he won for the nation of Israel.
1 Samuel 18:7 (NLT) This was their song: “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!”
- They have seen the growth, the wins, the expansion, the vision coming to pass, the profits, the success, the leader you have developed.
A. Jesus trained His disciples to develop them to be like Him.
Luke 6:40 (NLT) Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
B. The people that are under a A people Developer say;
- I was addicted, but now I’m free. I was defeated, but now victorious, I was in poverty, but now I’m prosperous, I was depressed and hopeless and now I have vision and a bright future. I was a failure, but now I’m a success, I was wasting my life away but now I’m living up to my potential. I didn’t know how to do it and you taught me. My marriage was failing and now I’m a marriage ministry leader, etc. . . .
Proverbs 22:1 (NLT) Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.
- Respect: when people respect us they admire our qualities and desire to be like us.
- Reputation: is general belief or opinion that other people have about us.
- Our reputation will always precede us- good or bad. Everything we are doing is building a good reputation or building a bad reputation. We can have a reputation of being on time or being late,
