DAILY GROWTH BOOK CHECK-IN

WHAT INSIGHTS DID YOU RECEIVE WHILE READING THE DAILY GROWTH BOOK THIS WEEK?

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

INTRO

  • Communication: to give, share or interchange thoughts, information and feelings by speaking, writing etc. . . To connect, interact, to join.
  • We can not have healthy relationships with bad communication. If we can get our hearts and words right, we can get our relationships right.

THREE SKILLS OF COMMUNICATION

*Someone please read the scripture below

James 1:19-20 (AMP) Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving];  for the [resentful, deep-seated] anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God [that standard of behavior which He requires from us].

DISCUSSION – WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU IN THE ABOVE SCRIPTURE?

I. SKILL #1-LISTENING.

*Someone please read the scriptures below

Proverbs 18:2,13 (NLT) 2.Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions…. 13 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.

INSIGHT

  • Quick: (ta-huse) ready, alert.
  • Listen: (ak-hoo) consider what is being said, learn, to give an ear to a teaching or a teacher, comprehend, to understand.
  • Fact: We cannot be effective communicators without becoming great listeners.
  • Listening is the most important relationship skill we can ever learn.
  • We have not earned the right to speak until we have understood the ideas, thoughts and feelings of the person we’re communicating with.
  • When applying the skill of listening, we should implement the following 4 rules:
    • RULE #1: Focus on understanding what is being communicated, not on what you are going to say next.
    • RULE #2 – Do not cut off the person that is speaking before they are completely done expressing their thoughts and feelings.
    • RULE #3 – After listening, give a summary of what you have understood and acknowledge the feelings that they have expressed.
    • RULE #4- If you don’t understand what they are communicating, ask questions to gain better understanding.

DISCUSSION – WHICH OF THE LISTENING RULES DO YOU FOLLOW? WHICH RULE DO YOU NEED THE MOST WORK ON?

II. SKILL #2- SPEAKING.

*Someone please read the scriptures below

Ephesians 4:29 (AMP) Do not let unwholesome [foul, dirty, filthy, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak].

Proverbs 15:1 (ERV) 15 A gentle answer makes anger disappear, but a rough answer makes it grow.

INSIGHT

  • When applying the skill of speaking, we should implement the following 3 rules:
    • RULE #1- Only use words that build and bless others.
    • RULE #2- Speak evil of no one.
    • RULE #3- Think and pray before you talk or respond.
  • Communication tip- Speak affirming Words to your spouse. We should have 5 positive deposits for every one negative. If our compliments exceed our complaints, our spouses will pay attention to our grievances. If our complaints exceed your compliments, our words will fall on deaf ears.
  • Exercise: Practice waiting 3 seconds before you speak or respond. Usually our first response is our flesh and the devil and the second response is from the Holy Spirit.

DISCUSSION – WHICH OF THE SPEAKING RULES DO YOU FOLLOW? WHICH RULE DO YOU NEED THE MOST WORK ON?

III. SKILL #3- EMOTIONAL SELF-CONTROL.

*Someone please read the scripture below

Proverbs 19:11 (NLT) Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs.

DISCUSSION – WHAT IS GOD REVEALING TO YOU IN THE ABOVE SCRIPTURE?

INSIGHT

  • When applying the skill of emotional self-control, we should implement the following 4 rules:
    • RULE #1 – Focus on understanding the person that your communicating with and don’t take things personal.
    • RULE #2- Don’t use harsh words because they make us and others emotionally charged.
    • RULE #3- Hold back your anger.
    • RULE #4- Stay calm when insulted.

QUESTION- WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU LEARNED FROM TODAY’S LESSON THAT YOU WILL APPLY TO YOUR LIFE THIS WEEK?

GIVING

In Matthew 14, Jesus poured out His life as an offering by choosing to serve the people even after hearing about the death of His cousin John. In doing so, Jesus shows us the impact our offerings can have on others. When we give what we have to Jesus, He knows how to multiply it and cause overflow. In this season of multiplication and growth, let’s put our offering into the Hands of God who will multiply it and cause it to impact the lives of others.

Matthew 14:18-19 (NLT) “Bring them here,” he said. Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.
