Luke 6:40 ESV A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
There is a principle here: the student will be like the teacher.

HOW DO WE BECOME LIKE JESUS?

#1 – BECOME A DISCIPLE OF JESUS CHRIST. (So many believers call themselves Christians, Church members, ministers, leaders, pastors, prophets, workers but few say I am a “disciple” of Jesus Christ.)
Quote: “Discipleship is the highest form of relationship.”

Disciple: (mathētēs/mä-thā-tā’s) a learner. Dictionary Definition: any follower of Jesus Christ. A disciple is one who follows the teachings or doctrines of a person whom he or she considers to be a master or authority. A person who is learning under the close supervision of a teacher. A student, refers to a person who is studying. A Scholar, once meaning the same as pupil, today usually applied to one who has profound knowledge of a particular subject or some field of learning.

The goal is to become a scholar and produce people who know the word.
A. GOAL IS TO WALK JUST LIKE CHRIST.
Ephesians 5:1-2 (NASB) 5 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

#2 – BECOME A DISCIPLE OF A DISCIPLE OF JESUS CHRIST.

Acts 2:42 ESV And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
A. REMEMBER THE TWO QUESTIONS? (These two questions keep us grounded, accountable and properly submitted.)

Question #1 – Who is discipling you?

Question #2 – Who are you discipling?

B. TO BECOME A DISCIPLE WE MUST HUMBLE OURSELVES AND SUBMIT TO A MENTOR/ TEACHER
(“A disciple isn’t above His teacher” That means in order to be a Disciple, we must be teachable and be willing to take the position of a student under someone that they acknowledge knows more than them.)

You cannot be a disciple if you think you know more than the person discipling you.

1 Peter 5:5-6 (CJB) 5 Likewise, you who are less experienced, submit to leaders. Further, all of you should clothe yourselves in humility toward one another, because God opposes the arrogant, but to the humble he gives grace. 6 Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the right time he may lift you up. Note: As we submit to our leaders, we are submitting to God.

C. BENEFITS OF HUMBLING AND SUBMITTING OURSELVES TO BECOME A DISCIPLE OF A LEADER.
BENEFIT #1 – GIVES THE SAME ATTITUDE OF CHRIST. (We clothe ourselves with Humility. Without Humility we can’t recieve anything from God or others and therefore can’t grow. Also humility puts us in a position to serve others.)

Humility: the having a humble opinion of one’s self, a deep sense of one’s (moral) littleness, modest opinion or estimate of one’s own importance, rank.
Philippians 2:5-11(NLT) 5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father

BENIFIT #2 – GOD WILL RELEASE HIS GRACE ON OUR LIVES.
1 Peter 5:5b …God opposes the arrogant, but to the humble he gives grace.
Grace: that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, good will, loving-kindness, favor which keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues, benefit, thanks, (for benefits, services, favors), recompense, reward
Instead of trying to impress others, be impressed with others.
Through more humility comes more grace and more release.
BENEFIT #3 – KILLS PRIDE. (Humbling ourselves to discipleship kills pride! We are personally admitting that someone else has more experience than I do and that I can learn from them.)
Proud: showing one’s self above others, overtopping (one-upping), with an overweening estimate of one’s means or merits, despising others or even treating them with contempt, haughty, appearing above others.
Only when you humble yourself will you receive your true identity in Christ.
Note: being prideful not only stops us from receiving the grace of God but actually makes us an enemy of God and causes Him to oppose us.

James 4:6 ESV But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Oppose: (antitassō) to range in battle against, to resist.
BENEFIT #4 – PROMOTION. (God will lift us up.)

Exalt: (hypsoō/ hü-pso’-ō to) lift up on high, to exalt, to raise to the very summit of opulence and prosperity, to raise to dignity, honor and happiness
#3 – SUBMIT TO DISCIPLESHIP PROCESS. (“when we are fully trained we will be like Christ our teacher.”)

Don’t buck the system. You are only preventing your own development.
