“CITY BUILDERS”

Today we will focus on one very important scripture as the foundation of our study. Who would like to read Isaiah 58:12?

Isaiah 58:12 (NLT) Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.

As a church, we have been called to love the unloved and reach unreached. While many people may leave broken and hurting cities, we are running to these cities. The Way was founded in San Bernardino, CA. Currently, 34.6% of the people in the city live in poverty. That makes San Bernardino the 2nd poorest large city in the nation. The crime rate is one of the highest in the nation. This is all the more reason why we need to bring the love of Jesus and the power of the Gospel to these cities.

Question – Why do you think people have difficulty reaching the inner-cities with God’s love?

Question – What is one “ruin” of your city that needs to be rebuilt? What can you do to help rebuild it?

God has given us 2 calls in these cities:

CALL #1- A CALL TO REBUILD

Taking a look at the verse we read earlier, we see 2 important words: Rebuild and Deserted.

The word Rebuild means to strengthen, empower, help, lift up again, and make new.

The word Deserted describes a place or people that have been destroyed, in decay, ruined, desolate and experienced great loss.

We are called to rebuild cities by rebuilding deserted people.

Question – Have you ever felt like your life was destroyed, desolate or in decay?

Jesus was called to heal all types of afflictions and diseases. Not only physically, but emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. Take a look at Matthew 9:35. Who would like to read?

Matthew 9:35 (ESV) 35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.

Question – What type of affliction do you see today that needs healing? The second call is:

CALL #2- A CALL TO RESTORE

The word Restore means to reverse damage or destruction, to bring back, to deliver, return to starting point. It refers to restoration of human relationships and spiritual relationship with God. It means to cause to repent and turn to God.

Question – What damage or destruction are you believing will be restored in your life?

Question – What damage or destruction are you believing will be restored in your city?

We restore cities by restoring homes. Our mission is to bring back God’s presence and Word back into our homes, our families, and our marriages. Our homes are meant to be a place where God’s name is honored and lifted up.

Question – What’s one way you can bring God’s presence into your home?

We restore people by reconciling them to God.

2 Corinthians 5:19 (NLT) For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”

Question – What can you do this week to restore people back to God?
