THE ONLY FOUNDATION YOU CAN DEPEND ON
TODAY’S PASSAGE:
Matthew 7:24-27 NLT 24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSWhat did you learn from what we just read?
- We build our house upon the rock when we hear and OBEY Jesus’ teachings. We build our house on the sand when we hear and DISOBEY Jesus’ teachings.
- Our response to Jesus’ teachings determines whether we build a stable and successful life or an unstable and defeated life.
- As builders, we have the responsibility to choose which foundation we will build our marriage, families, businesses and lives on.
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSCan anyone give an example of a time that you built your house on sand? What was the outcome?
- There are two steps to building well: 1) Listen and 2) Follow (Apply)
- First, we have to listen. If we don’t make time to listen, we won’t hear anything from God.
- Second, we have to follow. It’s not just about listening, obedience is the key!
- We must hear God AND obey what He says in order to have the right foundation for our lives.
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSWhat are some of the ways you can practice listening to the voice of God? What are some areas of your life that you need to adjust and follow the voice of God?
- The Scripture does not say “if” the storms come, it says “when” the storms come.
- In this story, the rain and winds hit both houses.
- Whether we build on the right foundation or not, the storms and trials of life will happen.
- Building on the right foundation does not exempt us from the storm, it just guarantees we will still be standing when the storm is over!
- There are only 2 possible outcomes to the storms of life. If we build our house on the solid rock of Jesus’ teachings, it won’t collapse. If we build our house on the sands of disobedience, it will collapse.
- DEFINITION – Collapse (ptōsis): downfall, ruin, misery, loss and defeat
- There is a lesson to learn in every storm, but none of those lessons include collapse and defeat.
- If we listen and obey all of Jesus’ teachings, we can praise Him through every storm because we know that God guarantees us victory in the end.
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSWhat are some of the storms you are facing right now and need prayer for? Is there any area of your life that has collapsed because of disobedience? Are you willing to confess and repent of it today?
CLOSING QUESTIONWhat is one thing from today’s lesson that you learned and will apply this week?
