SET APART FOR EVERY GOOD WORK

TODAY’S PASSAGE:

2 TImothy 2:20-26 NLT 20 In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. 21 If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work. 22 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. 23 Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. 26 Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSWhat did you learn from what we just read?
TRUTH #1Purity positions us to be used by God.
  • Purity: freedom from impurities, freedom from guilt or sin, blameless, clean.
  • God wants us to remain pure so that we can be used for honorable and good works.
  • Walking in impurity will keep us from fulfilling the assignments that God has for us.
  • Your conduct and your lifestyle matter to God. It determines if you are clean or unclean, set apart to God or not set apart to God, useful to Jesus or not useful to Jesus. It greatly affects how God can use you and will use you to touch the lives of others.
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSHas there been a time where you were walking in impurity and how did that affect your walk with God?
TRUTH #2Don’t play with fire! (run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts)
  • Verse 22 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.
  • Youthful lusts describe the sort of desires and temptations that lead to immorality and sin.
  • The command is simple: Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Don’t entertain them. Don’t challenge them. Don’t try and endure them. Don’t just walk away, Run!
  • When we fall to youthful lusts, we limit ourselves on how much God can use us.
  • You can’t really say “yes” to God and “yes” to the temptation at the same time.
  • Don’t worry, God will always provide a way of escape from anything that tries to tempt you.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT – The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSHas there ever been one area in your life that has stopped you from being fully useful for the Lord? If so, what is it?
TRUTH #3Keep our words pure!

2 Timothy 2:23-24 (NLT) – Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth.

  • Use your words to build others, not to tear them down. Use words of kindness, patience, and gentleness.
  • Even when we address someone that is dealing with sin, we must do so with love, gentleness, and humility. Remember: God showed you mercy, so let’s show others mercy.
  • Don’t talk about people behind their backs. Instead, learn to pray for people that are in your life. There is power when we pray for each other!

James 5:16 NLT Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSAs a DG, this is a place we can be honest and pray for each other. Is there struggle in your life that you’d like to let go and receive prayer for?
CLOSING QUESTIONWhat is one thing from today’s lesson that you will apply this week?

GIVING

Jesus commanded us to give to those who ask for help.

Matthew 5:42 (NLT) - Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Encourage everyone to give their tithes and offerings.
