TODAY’S PASSAGE:

2 Corinthians 12:8-10 NLT 8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSWhat did you learn from what we just read?
INSIGHT #1WE SHOULD ASK GOD FOR MORE STRENGTH NOT LESS DIFFICULTY. (v. 8)
  • In difficult times, we can be tempted to pray for God to remove the difficulty, but doing so will not help us to grow.
  • We all want God to provide us with quick relief in times of pain, however, relief is not always the right answer.
  • In order to build a muscle, it must be put under stress. In order to get stronger in our faith, we must go through stressful moments where we learn to rely on God’s strength.
  • Jesus often reminded his disciples that the road to life was not easy but difficult.

Matthew 7:14 (NLT) – But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.

  • When you find yourself in a difficult moment, don’t ask God to get you out. Ask Him to get you through.
  • INSIGHT: Many of the problems you are facing are merely promotions in disguise.
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSHave you ever went through a challenging situation that actually changed you for the better? Tell us about it.
INSIGHT #2GOD HAS MORE THAN ENOUGH STRENGTH FOR ANYTHING YOU ARE FACING. (v. 9)
  • Our greatest moments of weakness allow God to display His power best.
  • God assures us that He will provide the power and strength we need to help us through our weakness moments.
  • When we are empowered by God, there is literally nothing that we can’t make it through or accomplish.

Philippians 4:13 (NLT) – For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSHas God ever empowered you to do something you could not have done on your own? Tell us about it.
INSIGHT #3OUR WEAKNESS CAN BE USED TO PUT GOD’S STRENGTH ON DISPLAY (v. 10)
  • There will be times in our lives where we can do nothing but depend on God’s power to help us.

Psalm 108:12 (NLT) – Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless.

  • These moments of desperation can actually become proof of God’s power to save and deliver.
  • One of the ways that unbelievers are convinced of God’s existence is through a display of His power in our lives. When they recognize that it was humanly impossible for you to make it through like you did, it makes it plain that God was involved.
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONSWhy do suppose that God permits us to experience times of weakness?
CLOSING QUESTIONWhat is one thing from today’s lesson that you will apply this week?

GIVING

Psalm 112:9 (NLT)
