WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST
TODAY’S PASSAGE:
1 Peter 1:1-7 This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. 2 God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace. 3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. 6 So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
- Peter was writing to God’s chosen people who were foreigners in those regions.
- In the same way, we are God’s chosen people who are living as foreginers to this world. Our real home is in heaven!
Hebrews 13:14 NLT For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.
- God knew us and chose us long before we were ever born. And now the Holy Spirit makes us holy.
- Because God set us apart, we should walk in obedience to His word.
- Because Jesus gave up his life for us, we can receive salvation as part of our inheritance.
- It is only by God’s mercy that we can be born again.
- Our inheritance is the salvation we experience as born-again believers in Jesus Christ.
- Our inheritance is for now and for the future. This is why we live with great expecation. Because we know that with Jesus, the best is yet to come!
Ephesians 1:11 Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.
- Enduring through trials and spiritual tests demonstrates the genuineness of our faith, which brings God glory and gives us reason to rejoice.
- Faith is like a muscle: It becomes bigger and stronger as it works against resistance. The more frequent the exercise and the greater the resistance, the more powerful the muscle becomes
James 1:2-3 (NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
- Just as gold is refined by the heat of a refining fire, our lives are purified by trials of life.
- We can rejoice during trials because they give us the opportunity to prove the genuineness of our faith to God, ourselves, and those around us. (This brings praise, honor and glory to God.)
